2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 vs. 2022 Hyundai Kona EV: Choose the Right Balance

Hyundai is establishing itself as a leader in clean and efficient cars with a series of hybrids, PHEVs and full EVs that offer practicality, performance, and style in a package that everyone can afford. Moreover, Hyundai’s renowned reliability makes these new vehicles very attractive.

The Hyundai Kona EV has been on the road for a little while, making owners save tons of money on gas, but also transporting families anywhere and everywhere thanks to awesome range. Now, the Hyundai IONIQ5 is here and brings a whole new dimension to Hyundai’s EV lineup.

Here, we take a look at both products and outline some of the differences and resemblance.

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 and Kona EV both have impressive range figures

Full-electric range is important in any electric vehicle. That’s why both Hyundais boast impressive range numbers. With a max range of 415 kilometres, the Kona EV has plenty of juice to keep going and get you where you want to go.

The IONIQ 5, on the other hand, offers three range levels depending on the model you choose. The base model will travel up to 354 kilometres on a full charge, the long range model will push things much further with 480 kilometres of range. Finally, the AWD model will get you 435 kilometres of range.

In terms of performance, the Hyundai Kona EV will provide 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque which is plenty of zip if you’re looking to go out on the town, or take a weekend off to explore the mountains.

The Hyundai IONIQ5 has three power levels. The base model has 168 horsepower, the extended-range model churns out 225 horsepower and the AWD model ranks in at 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, which is quite impressive!

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 has all-wheel drive

One of the main differences between the two vehicles is that the new IONIQ5 is available with AWD and the Kona EV isn’t. That can be a deal breaker for Canadian drivers looking for more control in the snow.

Also, the Hyundai Kona EV offers less cargo volume in the rear then the IONIQ 5. With 770 litres in normal configuration and 1,680 litres when the rear seating is folded, the IONIQ5 gives you more space than the Kona EV, which only has 544 litres and 1,296 litres respectively.
