How a Pre-Owned Hyundai Kona is the CUV for You

The Hyundai Kona has fast become one of the most popular subcompact crossovers available in Canada. Its funky styling, its powertrain choices – including a full battery-electric (EV) option – and its interior features were all big draws for buyers.

That all holds true in the previously-owned market; since the Kona has only been available since the 2018 model year and since the average Canadian drives about 25,000 kilometres a year, there are plenty of low-mileage Konas in fine form available on the pre-owned market.

The first thing you’ll want to do when considering a pre-owned Kona is to think about the powertrain, as it is available with both all-wheel-drive (AWD) and front-wheel-drive (FWD). If you’re on the lookout for good fuel economy without going to an EV, then the FWD model is for you. If stability and confidence in slippery situations is more what you’re after, then the AWD model is a good choice. It should be noted that the Kona Electric is available only as a FWD, as that’s one of the best ways to ensure good EV range, which sits at around a claimed 415 km.

After that, you’ll want to consider your engine as two were available in addition to the EV motor: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine good for 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque and a sporty 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder option that makes 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. Of the two, only the 2.0-litre model is available with FWD, while the 1.6 comes standard with AWD. The Electric, meanwhile, makes 201 hp and 291 lb-ft. The 2.0L gets a six-speed auto, the 1.6 a seven speeder and the Electric gets a direct-drive 1-speed ‘box.

And of course, there’s the question of trims: the Kona has always been offered in Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury and Ultimate trims. You’ll find heated seats on most, while the upper trims will offer goodies like a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a whole lot more.

The Hyundai Kona’s star continues to rise – why not jump on board?
