Hyundai IONIQ 5 Clinches Top IIHS Safety Award

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has secured its place at the forefront of vehicle safety, having been awarded the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ for the 2024 model by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). This achievement underscores the brand’s commitment to safety in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs).

The IONIQ 5 stands out with its advanced safety features, wrapped within a design that is both distinctive and innovative. With a range that reaches up to 300 miles on certain trims, the IONIQ 5 is not just about aesthetics and performance—it’s about getting you to your destination safely.

A Closer Look at the Safety Enhancements

For the 2024 model year, the IONIQ 5 underwent significant safety reinforcements. The B-pillar and door sill, integral parts of a vehicle's side structure, have been robustly enhanced to align with the IIHS’s revised and more demanding side crash testing protocols. This has been a part of Hyundai's larger strategy to go beyond the standard safety features, by introducing a suite of Hyundai SmartSense safety technologies.

Brian Latouf, the global chief safety officer at Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the vehicle's plethora of standard safety systems and advanced driver assistance features, which set the IONIQ 5 apart from its competitors. The commitment to safety is not a mere point of pride but a continuous pursuit, as highlighted by Latouf, promising ongoing innovations in safety alongside design and engineering.

David Harkey, president of the IIHS, affirmed the vehicle's performance under rigorous testing, particularly praising the IONIQ 5's response to the new side crash evaluations. The SUV's lighting options include Good-rated LED projector headlights and Acceptable-rated LED reflectors, contributing to the overall safety profile. Moreover, the IONIQ 5’s front crash prevention system received top marks for pedestrian safety in daylight conditions and an advanced rating at night.

Meeting the Gold Standard

Achieving the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation is no small feat. A vehicle must excel across various stringent crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front, the moderate overlap front, and the newly updated side impact tests. Furthermore, top-tier headlight ratings and an advanced or superior front crash prevention system must be a standard feature across all trims, affirming the vehicle's capability to safeguard occupants during both day and night-time pedestrian encounters.

The IONIQ 5’s attainment of the TOP SAFETY PICK+ reflects Hyundai's meticulous attention to detail and relentless dedication to passenger safety. As electric vehicles continue to gain momentum in the automotive market, the 2024 IONIQ 5 sets a benchmark for future models, melding environmental consciousness with an uncompromising stance on safety.
